One person died Sunday when alleged thugs attacked an election officer for announcing Mr. Abdullahi Suleiman Chukuba as the winner of the primary presidency for the Shiroro local government area of the state of Niger.
Chukuba participated in the platform of the All Progressive Congress (APC).
Nigeria Today Newspaper report that Alhaji Adamu Usman, Police Commissioner, made the announcement in an interview with the Nigerian News Agency (NAN) in Minna.
He said five other people were also injured during the attack. He said the divisional police officer and other security agencies had taken the officer returning from the collation center to Minna.
He explained that after announcing the results, some people loyal to the defeated contender, Alhaji Akilu Isiyaku, attacked the returning officer and damaged his vehicle.
“One Isa Saidu lost his life and five others were injured during the incident,” he said.
The commissioner said the command would do everything humanly possible to arrest those responsible and take them to the reserve.
Violence, intimidation and the manifestation of violent behavior will not be tolerated before, during and after local government elections.
“We will not tolerate any act capable of confusing the state before, during and after the elections,” he said.
The police chief warned that any person or group he wants will be arrested and prosecuted.
