There is a palpable tension in the state of Bauchi, as many students at Abubakar University Tafawa Balewa, Bauchi, were reportedly killed after the collapse of a bridge linking the University on Monday night.
The incident was the result of a torrential downpour in the state that lasted several hours. The exact number of victims is incomplete, as some sources within the school said two students were washed, while some said three, and some even put the number in four and others were still missing.
A source said: “I learned that eight students had been killed, many others are missing. A corpse was found around the Nigerian Air Force Base (more than 5 kilometers away), many are still missing. ”
According to another source within the institution, “the bridge linking the classes with the shelters collapsed as a result of the torrential rain of yesterday (Monday) while the students returned to the shelters.”
A student from the University posted on his Facebook account that, “We learned that there was a sudden disaster that happened at ATBU, the Gubi campus, which affected many of our students, and there could be loss of life. Please pray for them, and anyone with relatives, brothers, sisters should ask about their well-being. ”
Another student who declared anonymity said the incident occurred between 11.30 p.m. and 12 a.m.
GISTOK report that the institution’s students are currently writing their first-semester exam.
When contacted by phone, the institution’s spokesman, Dr. Andee Iheme, told DAILY POST that “an emergency meeting in the Senate was convened this morning and we will have a press conference immediately after that.”
