The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Enugu Zonal Office, said Monday that it had arrested 27 suspected internet scammers.
EFCC spokesman Wilson Uwujaren said the suspects were arrested at Eura Hostel, Naze-Obibiezena Road, Nekede, and Bloomnesdays Plaza Hostel, Nekede, in Owerri, Imo.
Although Uwujaren did not give the names of the suspects, he said his arrest was the result of intelligence and constant vigilance by the commission.
He said a team of operatives conducted a raid on their residences after intelligence information established that the suspects lived beyond their means.
“They lived above their means through the income of their fraudulent activities, so there was a coordinated raid on their residences,” he said.
The EFCC spokesperson listed items retrieved from suspects such as mobile phones, laptops, and three Lexus E350 cars with registration numbers AFM 206 MK, WER 468 PP, and LAG 615 FE.
He also said that two Lexus R300 sport utility vehicles with MUS 276 FB, NGN 153 NX registration numbers, and a Toyota Avalon with AAA 124 EP registration number were also recovered.
Uwujaren said the suspects had already provided useful information about the crime and would be indicted in court after the investigation.
