Fire razes Maiduguri GSM market

Dozens of stores and properties worth millions of Naira were destroyed in Thursday night’s fire at the Maiduguri GSM market.

Latest Nigeria newspaper report that the fire began at approximately 8:00 pm and lasted several hours before it was extinguished through firefighters, security personnel, and community members.

The market popularly called “Kasuwar Jagol” is located in the post office area of ​​the metropolis, providing commercial spaces to thousands of merchants and artisans in the area.

Ambursa Pindar, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Borno Fire Service that confirmed the incident, said the service deployed five fire vehicles at the scene of the fire.

Pindar said the service would evaluate to determine the extent of the damage. An eyewitness, Abdulrahman Tahir, said the fire started in one of the stores and wrapped other stores in the market.

Tahir, a mobile phone seller, lamented that several merchants lost their assets in the fire. However, he said he successfully recovered his property due to the rapid response of firefighters and security personnel who put out the fire.

Latest Nigeria newspaper report that armed security personnel was deployed in the market to avoid the looting by thugs.
