Onitsha tanker explosion: Obiano takes action over fire incident

Anambra Governor Willie Obiano set up a panel to investigate the fire incident in Onitsha, the state’s commercial capital, which killed at least two people on Wednesday.

Latest Nageria newspaper report that a tanker loaded with petroleum products fell into a ditch and spilled its contents, which resulted in an explosion.

The fire razed the structures, including the shops on the Upper Iweka road and at the Ochanja market. The men of the Anambra State Fire Service could not put out the fire, making an angry crowd at the scene to prevent other fire trucks from making more attempts.

A statement signed by Mr. Don Adinuba, Anambra Information Commissioner, said the governor had sympathized with the victims of the tragic incident.  He added that efforts were made to help those who lost property in the fire.

The statement says: “Governor Obiano and all the people of the state of Anambra regret this unfortunate situation and His Excellency has taken steps to address the concerns of those affected.

Latest Nageria newspaper report that the government asks property owners affected by the tragic accident, store owners and representatives of the families of deceased victims to meet in Ekwueme Square, Awka on Monday, October 21, 2019, at 11 am to obtain documentation and see how the Anambra State Government can help you.

“The governor created a panel headed by the Deputy Governor, HE. Dr. Nkem Okeke, to immediately determine the cause of the accident, why the firefighters could not put out the fire, and how the condition of the victims can be improved.

Latest Nageria newspaper report that Governor Obiano and all citizens of the state of Anambra identify with the victims of this unfortunate fire incident and with the general inhabitants of Onitsha about this sad hell. The Anambra State Government will do everything possible to support those affected. “
