The President of Guinea will face new charges
The military authorities of Guinea are going to conduct an additional investigation against former President Alpha Conde, who this time is accused of treason, writes Al-Jazeera. He had previously been charged in absentia with corruption, murder and torture.
The start of the investigation was announced by the Minister of Justice Alphonse Charles Wright. This comes two years after the Guinean leader was ousted as president in a military coup.
Conde ruled the country for two terms, but then decided to change the Constitution to provide for the possibility of becoming head of state for the third time. The protests that began were brutally suppressed, after which the president was overthrown in September 2021 by an elite army unit under the command of Colonel Mamadi Dumbuya. The former head of state managed to escape, now he lives in Turkey. Guinea's military leaders promise to return the country to civilian rule by 2026.
The new investigation concerns "alleged treason, criminal conspiracy and complicity in the illegal possession of weapons and ammunition."
Conde is not the only president of Guinea under investigation. Even earlier, another former leader of the country, Moussa Dadis Kamara, escaped from prison, but was detained again on November 4 and returned. He is a former army officer who came to power as a result of a coup and led the country from December 2008 to January 2010. Kamara has been in custody since September 2022. He is accused of murder, sexual violence, torture and kidnapping. Because of the escape of the ex-head of the country, 60 employees of the colony were fired.
