Two medical doctors on trial over death of pregnant woman

Two doctors from the Federal Medical Center, Asaba, appeared before the Court of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria to answer the charges of severe professional negligence.

Latest Nigeria newspaper report that doctors, Iyiola Adewale, and Adigba Onodjohwoyovwe, were charged with severe professional negligence, which caused the death of a patient in their care.

The prosecutor, Nasiru Aliyu, told the court in Asaba on Monday that the defendants while on duty on March 7, 2017, negligently handled one of their patients, a pregnant woman, Ms. Rita Uchebuego, now late.

According to the prosecutor, they allegedly did not treat her as was appropriate for the management of her condition.
Aliyu added that the crime is punishable under article 16 of the Physicians and Dentists Act.

However, the defendants pleaded not guilty to the charge. The president of the court, Professor Abba Hassan, postponed the case until September 24, for his address.
